Best PDF reader for an academic

After a slightly rocky start, PDF Expert for Mac has become a fast, attractive, neat PDF reading and annotation tool. The tabbed viewing is exceptionally useful, and the annotation options (handsome highlights with addable notes) are perfect, especially since they sync across operating systems. And now that Split View has been added, I can do almost everything I need to to PDFs (except OCR - but thats what DEVONthink Pro Office is for) around reading while simultaneously searching for full contained references.
